Check Gauges light on Fuel Gauge Falls..HELP!!

If anyone has any ideas please, pretty please, let me know.
Here is what is going on. When driving my 2001 Sunfire Automatic with about 67,000 miles on it all of the sudden my Check Gauges light comes on and my Gas Gauge starts falling and the first time it almost got to empty so I stopped and shut off the car and restarted it. When I restarted it said I had a full tank. It didnt do it again for a few minutes but the next time it did it it only went down a quarter of a tank or so. and then the check gauges light shut off and the Gas Gauge started to climb back up...ANY IDEAS??????

It appears the float associated with the in-tank assembly is perforated. This causes the float to fill with fuel and sink into the fuel; which normally kicks in the chk gauge light. It is possible the wiring needs to the unit needs to be cleaned and firmly reconnected; but I'd expect the chk gauge light would not respond with an alert if that was the case.
