i just bought this car and all if done is added motor oil,transmission fluid, and fuel conditioner. IF i change oil w/ filter and change spark plugs what are the expected gas increase? any other way to increase horsepower and mileage?

302? are you sure it is not a 305?. If it is, it's actually a chevy 305. In which case check local speed shops or you can call summit racing and talk to a tech. They can give you some build info that will get you more HP. Olds engine options in 78 79 80 were chevy small blocks in the V8's except the H/O which had the true Olds 350.
Chevy 305 & 350's came stock in Olds for those years until early 80's when Olds created the 307.

A set of headers and a nice freeflowing exhaust system will give you a nice HP boost, plus it would help increase your car's fuel mileage. Of course, do a complete tuneup, plugs, fluids, filters, check all the vacuum hoses and replace any that are missing or damaged, and check your timing.
