AEM intake + engine temp

Not sure whether to post this under Problem's thread or Performance... But ever since installing the AEM intake a friend got me, I've noticed that whenever I'm in stop and go rush hour traffic, the engine temp would rise one to two notches. If I don't turn on the AC / blow off hot air, the fan would start until it cools down to a respectable temp (assuming I've turned off the car). Well, when we were installing the AEM intake, the only way we could get the shroom to fit was installing it onto the stock pipe (he basically gave it to me after he got a K&N for his Honda CRV). Here's a picture to show what I mean.

Hood Pic
*Ignore the ducktape and zipline, it was to keep the intake from rattling around*

I was wondering if this setup was fine (or can I not install this intake / have to put the stock intake system back in) cause most people I've asked say they don't experience the engine rise in rush hour traffic

Thanks for the help.

Re: AEM intake + engine temp

What engine doesn't rise "1 or 2 notches" in rush hour/stop and go traffic. Hell, my twin cam will damn near push up to the 3/4 mark on the gauge where the running temperature is at the halfway mark.

For the record, if you're installing an intake, remove everything stock that it replaces: tubing from the TB and the airbox. And call me crazy, but it looks like you just got a cone filter and tried ot hook it up to your stock air hose, and you should probably be shot for that. Unless you're actually going to buy a real intake, ditch the cone filter and go buy a K&N replacement filter element for your stock box.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I can't half a-s-$ it this way after all.

And just to educate me even more, is there a reason the above setup is "wrong"? Is it cause of bad airflow if I did it as shown? I thought the reason for the cone shape filter was so it could suck in more air compared to the stock. First "my" car, so I'm new at all this

Re: AEM intake + engine temp

That's not really so much of the purpose at all. Its got more surface area, so it does flow a bit more air. The real benefit in an intake comes from the piping itself, especially if you get a nice mandrel bent intake.

What you did is attach a cone filter to your air hose...which is stupid. I wouldn't say it's going to flow less air, but it won't flow more, either. Either put your air box back in and go the cheap performance route and get a drop in K&N or actually do something smart and but an intake with a K&N Filter Element. Then you'll be in the money.
