Another Quick Q... Gas gauge

About 6 months ago my gas gauge went FUBAR. If I fill up the tank it'll be past the full mark on the gauge, but when it's empty it'll be around the 3/4 mark on the gauge. When I go to start the truck the gauge does the self test where it drops to Empty then goes back up to full. I've checked wires, took out instrument panel and checked connections. So besides replacing the sending unit (cost WAY too much IMO) I just thought I'd ask for suggestions or see if anyone else was having this problem. Thanks in advance.

it pretty well has to be the sending unit.

I have the same problem with my Ford Tempo daily driver, and I don't mind the money, I just don't want to take the time to do the work unless I have to

Fuel gauges seem to be a common problem. Mine stopped working, after checking for loose grounds, I changed the sending unit and that fixed it.

The problem is the sending unit is attached to the fuel pump, which is located inside the gas tank. I found a used pump/sending unit online, saved lots of $$$, haven't had any problems with it.
