1995 Sunfire -motor Conks Out

Hi new to this
have a 1995 Sunfire with 417,000 kms
bought it brand new in 1995
working fine till today
was caught in a traffic jam and while stopped in the traffic the engine
sputtered off
when I started the car again no problems but if I dont hit the gas right away it will conk out again
now on most streets not a problem try making a left turn with that
problem
anyways got to work safe and sound
well car had a rest of 8 hours
started in the parking lot no problems and did not conk out
on the way home
however different conditions no stop and go traffic and temp
was much cooler in the day
any idea what the problem is
I must add have not change the oil oil filter or air filter for some time
like 15,000 km or so but only do highway driving normally

seems to me something overheats and causes the car to stall
after driving a bit but only when I slow down for a traffic light etc

any help would be appreciated
