3400 5 speed options (also intro)

Hello all yes, I'm a n00b here, but I DID search, and could not find the answers I was looking for. The transmission is going out on my buddies 2000 GA GT (automatic). This has really left us in a dillema as we wanted to keep the auto till after the turbo stuff was done, but that doesnt look like its going to happen. I have heard of people saying a 3.1 and 2.8 5 speed trans will work for the swap in this car. Will the flywheel bolt up from that 3.1 to the 3400? I'm assuming I would have to make a hybrid axle to fit, and make some custom mounts of some sort. Do the GAs have electric speed sensors or cable drivin? the ECU shouldnt freak out with the lack of automatic right? What clutch pedal assembly will bolt in or will I have to make one and hydrolic or cable drivin? There are prolly a bunch of other little things I'm missing I would appreciate the help, and so would my buddy. not good to brake down after 7 races oh no no.

So now some of you are prolly curious as to whats goin on here haha. His car is a Nice black 2000 GA GT 2 door, lowered 2 inches, (finally conned him into going back to the stock front and rear clip), 17 inch rims, fully gutted short of the dash yet, A set of procar race seats that I made the bracketry for, I'm working on fabricating custom strut bars and harness bars, CAI and a flowmaster , In autocross the car pulls decent times to be competitive, and in 1/8th mile it pulls like a 10.4 at liek 70mph (dont memorize the timeslips yet). Its good now that we have the base times, I'm going to start building up the new engine and custom intake manifold in about 2 or 3 weeks. This little delay is sort of a kick in the arse as we were planning on sticking with this tranny till it died a little farther in the future. Guess the clock ticks quicker on borrowed time. . . .

Re: 3400 5 speed options (also intro)

This info may help: The GA platform has the bracket that is needed for the clutch pedal due to the fact that the GA is available with manual transaxle. I would go to a wrecking yard and find a donor GA that has a stick and steal what you can off of it (clutch pedal, master cylinder, tranny, etc). As far as the speedo goes it is electronic (no cables) and is controlled by one of the car's two main on board computers (either the body control module or powertrain control module or both). I'm not sure how easy it would be to work around the computer after swaping to a stick because the computer which controls the automatic is the same computer that controls the engine and it may not like being without the auto. My advice would be to install a "piggy back" ECU or better yet scrap the stock computer altogether and get a stand alone ECU. Since your going turbo anyway you will want full control of the fuel mapping for the computer which you won't get from the factory computer (you will, but it is very limited). Check out some of the Fiero websites which will have tons of info on mating the 3.4 to a stick. HTH

Oh yeah, welcom to the site.
