90 GTS Grinding in 3rd Gear

Hey does any one hear know why my 3rd gear grinds? My brother in-law just a 90 gt and his 3rd gear grinds also. Is it a inherent problem or is it just time to replace the tranny? I have been able to make it not grind by pushing in the clutch all the way to the floor and slowly putting it into 3rd. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yes using the clutch should help...jp....but its probably ur syncros, if you really dont want it to grind just double clutch it, pull it out of 2nd put it in nutral let off the clutch, put the clutch back in and put it into 3rd

this makes it so the syncros arent used and it should go into gear easyer, my 2nd gear syncro is FRIED, clutch to the floor and it grinds becuase all the extra power i made, so now i have to double clutch upshift so it dosent

(btw double clutching is really meant as a downshift technique to save syncro life, i do it with every gear every time)

So this syncro thing is it a part of the clutch system or what. I have never heard of double shifting either. That sounds good...I'll try that as soon as I get my car back from the shop. I've had there for two weeks now.

i own a 1990 ST and it does the same exact thing when i shift into third gear to fast. i just let the rpm's drop to 2000 then shift. tranys shake at like 2000-3000 rpm's when they go...im on my second one @ 201000 miles and still rocking out!

ive got a 90 gt and mine grinds in second, my buddys got a 87 and his grinds in third also...seems to be a pretty common problem w/ older celicas...but yea the double clutching works most of the time....i do it in second...or if you pull it out of the lower gear and let the rpm drop, and shift slow it usually wont grind

My Celica does the same thing. It in the syncros. You'll find that over time you eventually don't be able to keep the car in 3rd without holing the shifter there. It'll start popping itself back into neutral. It's not a big problem. You can still drive with it. What I usually do is save my third for uphill or when I absolutly need it. I go to about 4,000 rpms and go from2nd to 4th. It's not bad to do. At first I didn't like doing it but I take my car to a toyota specialist and he suggested it. When you do put your car in 3rd like 91 Celica St said double clutch it or push your clutch in right until you feel it disengage and then slide it into 3rd. Eventually you get used to it ha ha. I don't have the money right now to rebuild my tranny so I deal with it
