POWERTRAIN: 6.7-liter, 525-hp, 535-lb-ft V8; rwd, six-speed manual CURB WEIGHT: 3774 pounds 0 TO 60 MPH: 4.6 seconds (mfr.) If you follow the success of Cadillac’s SCCA Speed World Challenge racing program, you might wish your off-the-shelf CTS V-Series performed with the same gusto as Caddy’s race car. Now, thanks to Michigan-based Katech Inc.—Cadillac’s race engine builder—you can at least narrow the performance gap between your street-legal V and the winning World Challenge car. Ironically, while the CTS-V race car must run a production-based engine per SCCA rules, Katech’s K-Series draws power from a 6.7-liter engine crafted from the same General Motors race block Katech uses to build 7.0-liter Corvette C5-R V8 competition engines. The K-Series engine shares little with the stock CTS-V’s LS6: Katech installs a forged crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods, as well as its own camshaft, CNC-ported cylinder heads (from the LS6, but featuring custom lightweight, hollow-stem intake valves) and ported throttle body. Ceramic-coated stainless-steel exhaust headers complete the work. Engineers claim the engine is good for 525 hp at 6200 rpm and 535 lb-ft of torque at 4800 rpm. Zero to 60 mph comes in just 4.6 seconds, the quarter-mile in 12.65 seconds at 117 mph. Such scorching performance is significantly better than the 5.35 seconds and 13.76 seconds at 105.5 mph we recorded in our stock CTS-V AutoFile test (AW, May 10). The engine is available as a stand-alone upgrade or along with a handling package, which includes custom H&R lowering springs, QA1 Carrera racing shocks, and 275/35R-19 Michelin or Bridgestone tires mounted on Katech one-piece forged alloy wheels. Slotted stock brake rotors, softer brake pads and braided Teflon brake lines are also part of the package. At roughly $38,000 (on top of the stock V’s $49,995 sticker) for the entire shebang, the K-Series doesn’t represent the deal of the century, but it will likely cost a couple thousand dollars less than BMW’s forthcoming E60 M5. If you want one, get it before it’s gone: Katech hasn’t finalized production plans, but will build no more than 50 vehicles per year. a link to Katech's website http://www.katechengines.com/katech_inc/ Lingenfelter has modifications for the CTS-V. http://www.lingenfelter.com/pack_cad_cts.htm http://www.caranddriver.com/assets/image/105200416478.jpg Jaguar D-Type 06-07-2005, 11:16 PM Jaguar D-Type 08-22-2005, 11:11 PM The 2006 CTS-V has a new LS2. It has the same power output as the LS6 in the 04-05 CTS-V (400 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque), but it has more refinement and a broader torque curve. The 2006 CTS-V also has a standard sunroof. Here is an article about the new Corvette's LS2. It says it has 400 hp at 5,200 rpm and 395 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, but that is false. The LS2 actually has 400 hp at 6,000 rpm and 400 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. Mine os an 05, stock with gm carbon fiber engine covers. Nice car for the dollars spent. You could go with a quicker car stock but your looking at going over a 20k margin. Also, you'll be losing the great aftermarket these motors are know for. Mallet, IMO, is a bit pricey and you can have a 600rwhp+ for less... wont have the mallet exclusivity but still have the power.
