Engine rebuild

Just out of curiosity...how much would it cost if I a paid a mechanic to have my engine rebuilt??? Assuming the engine would already be removed from the truck and that the only new parts needed would be the basics like gaskets and seals with only minor machining. I kinda want to know cuz im graduating in few weeks and im wondering if this would even be worth asking my father to get me for a graduation present.

Engine rebuilds are very expensive if I remember right. The price should be atleast in the four digits.

Generally you would not get your engine rebuilt--A garage will purchase an engine from a rebuilder and charge you a markup on it and install it. Look online for a rebuilder close to you to cut costs on shipping. Buy it and install it yourself--If you can pull the old engine out you can put the new one in. Cost should be between 1500 to $2500 depending on what you put in the rebuild specs. New from chevy about $2000-$3000 depending on engine.

Eww. unless its like $1500 or less no can do. The overhaul kits are $490 with pistons and an oil pump but with all the other little things needed it would prolly be around $800 for parts and if i have the engine out i would go ahead and get headers. So if i want it bad enough ill just do the work myself, only drawback there being the truck would sit for at least a month.

I put a short block roller cam 350 from an engine rebuilder in my 88 K3500, ended up about $750 for everything, but I got the engine wholesale and did the heads myself on a friend's valve machine. If you can do the work yourself that is the best and cheapest way to go.Good luck!!

i replaced a motor in a 91 chevy pick up and did it all for about $800. i bought the motor from a local rebuilder..........they called it a premium long block.......included every thing but the external parts ( intake. valve covers, everything on the front of the motor, distributer.etc.) it only took 2 days (sat.-sun.) to pull the old one and stab the new one in.

OK maybe i should be more clear with a renewed plan. I plan to buy an overhaul kit for my engine and do the work myself, other than parts machining. Meaning i would be completely disassembling my engine and cleaning and inspecting everything. SO im gonna guess that cost to be about $700 for the overhaul kit, water pump, machine work, and all the other lil stuff.

Yeah somewhere in there. Might be a little bit more if you replace more external parts like stuff on the accessory bracket etc. I know this is off topic, but due to curiosity, what came in your HD chassis package? I saw that in your signature and just wondered.

Is this your first time rebuilding a motor? What makes you believe you need to rebuild it? I personally would go the route of rebuilding it yourself. The truck may sit, but if your willing to be patient and persistent, you will be rewarded financially in the money that you save compared to having someone do it for you. You will also have gained invaluable experience throughout the entire ordeal. I personally find the biggest benifit, other than monetary, to be that I can pick and choose the quality and brand of parts that gets put back into the motor, instead of just assuming someone was looking out for my well-being, NOT! You also have control of who does the machining of the block and heads, so now you have accountability. However, you will have no one to blame if you re-assemble something in the wrong order and cause catastrophic failure of your project. I don't like part store rebuilds for the simple fact that a majority of the motors are rebuilt outside of the states and quality control isn't maintained. If you were to buy a crate motor, I would find the best deal you can on a GM Performance Parts crate motor or just a plain crate motor. Just my two cents. -Chris

Im not specifically sure what it is thats in that package, but i have 3/4 ton leaf springs, 9.5" 14 bolt rear diff, bigger drum brakes, class 5 hitch, trans cooler....i think thats about it..

This would be my first rebuild, but i have a haynes manual and can read so i figure as long as im patient i can do it. Really money isnt my largest concern, it is will the truck have more power than ever. I wanna rebuild it cuz its leaking oil for one, but mainly i wanna make it like new again so i can have a more reliable power potential. Common fact is the more power you get from an engine, the less longer it will last. For example, someday i wanna get a cam kit and nitrous so it would be foolish to put that kinda stuff on a tired engine.
