Okay....My dad has a 2000 Max GLE...so i decided to also buy a max, but a 4gen., I was wondering:

What changes have occured in each max from 95-99?
Which Year has the most aftermarket potential?
Which model also has the most aftermarket potential?
Which year and model does everone here own?

Thanks, plz expect more questions from me soon ;)

For a run-down on the Max generations, go to www.maxima.org and read their FAQ's.

IMO, 4th gen has the most aftermarket parts available, probably 98/99 in particular. But there is a no shortage of stuff for third and fifth gen's. For first and second gen's, I'm not so sure.

Any model of Max... GXE/GLE/SE... has about the same aftermarket potential as they all use the same engine/tranny/suspension (except GLE which is auto-only in some years). Although, I suppose you could say GXE has more potential because it would benefit from the (minor) suspension mods standard on SE.

I have read of a several people turning their fifth-gen GXE's into SE's by buying the badges, pedals, shifters, engine covers, handles etc. Then do their own suspension mods that are more aggressive than Nissan's for the SE. Don't ask why; it just shows how little separates the two.

The best years to upgrade a Maxima is the 95&96. These were the fastest maximas because they were slightly lighter than later years, and their ECU is better. Many people were not too hot about their look, but there is things you can buy that will make any 95&96 look like 97-99. Another important fact about the ECU is that 97+ maximas can't get a ECU upgrades. I know that there is one through maximadriven.com, but I haven't heard much about it. The 3rd Generation can have a turbo from a older 300ZX. Those are fun too. Good luck on your purchase. Take care.

Hey MAX7,

Is it maximadriver.com or maximadriven.com I didn't get anything from maximadriven.com Also, I haven't seen anything for our 99 max in the way of an ecu upgrade.......... do you know anyone who has done anything for the ecu. I know that there's a hand held unit you can buy to dump more fuel into the system. All you have to do is plug in the adapter into the Diagnostic's port at the bottom of the driver's side (you know that funny plug by your right knee?) and hit the button. Would that be the thingy you are talking about?

There is no upgrades as far as ECU for our year. There is one person I know that wired an upgraded ECU from a 96 and his check engine light was on. I guess if you can deal with it, that's fine.
