Unhappy C4 loose steering wheel column

Hello everyone, I have a question, how can I tighten up my steering wheel column on my '84? Its kinda loose right now, and I think its getting worst. Is it going to be an easy task, or should I just take it to the shop to have a mechanic fix it? To let the pro handle it. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks a lot everybody!

Can you be more specific about what is slipping is it the steering as you turn the steering wheel or the tilt of the the column?

If it is the steering wheel slipping while you turn it. I had the same problem on my 85 and replaced what is called the intermediate steering shaft assembly (under the hood). I found a used one on E-Bay, It has been trouble free for years now.

Sometimes the intermediate steering shafts will start to slip on these Cars. It is made in 2 pieces so that it will collpase upon impact. Look at the red in this pic. That is where the 2 pieces are pressed together with a rubber in between. If its slipping, you will see it there or at "D".

What you can do is get some bushings that will fit in the hole at "D". take the shaft off and press them in on both sides. Hope this helps.

Re: C4 loose steering wheel column

U will need to find the source of the looseness. Take the bottom panel off under tha dash and have someone move the wheel. There may be some bolts loose there.
