"Button" stuck on 96 Neon shifter (auto)

My buddy has a 96 Neon SOHC. It's an automatic and the button on the shifter is stuck in the shifter. It won't pop back out! He is unable to get the car out of park. Are these things spring loaded/activated? Any tricks to getting the handle off so we can check it out? We removed the lower consol, just the handle is in the way. Thanks!
