Cam Shaft Sensor

Can anyone point me or tell me what is the importance of the Cam Shaft Sensor, how it effects the performance of my truck, or general info on what is it? The check Eng Light started coming on pretty regularly, but would go off. Autozone said it was the Cam Shaft Sensor.
