Possible timing belt issue HELP

I have a 1988 Toyota Camary standard, 4cy. The other day I was in 4th gear and I went to press on the gas and it didn't accelerate. I downshifted to 3rd and still no accerlation. Then all the lights went on on the dash and my car died and I glided to a stop. When I try to start it, there is power but the initial turnover doesn't happen. There is just an initial squeal and it won't start. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Welcome to the AF!

I'm not sure what you mean by "the initial turnover doesn't happen."

If you mean the engine cranks but never fires a cylinder, then your title says it all. Probably your timing belt, but it could be other ignition or fuel problems. See if the distributor shaft turns when you crank the engine. If it turns, your timing belt is not broken (although it might have jumped a couple of teeth) and you better look elsewhere.

Re: Possible timing belt issue HELP

If your engine doesn't turn at all, it's possible that the timing belt is broken and stuck between pulleys that's why the engine won't turn.

If you would like to replace the belt by yourself, got to get a manual. It's not a simple task to most people. Good luck.
