somthing weird happend to my 96gsxscottsee 05-14-2005, 11:40 AM i was driving home last night from the video store around 9:30pm from renting Alone in the dark. what a gay ass movie that turned out to be!! i stoped at a light, lanched my car at the green and when i shifted to second and hit full boost somthing litterlay exploded eather underneath my car or in my engine compartment. it sounded like 20 peices of metal rumbling around under the hood or in my tranny. the first thing that poped in my head was: trannys in peices.. i shifted to nutral and coasted into a parking lot. when i got in the parking lot i stuck it back in gear beacase my curriosity got the best of me, and i realised i didnt blow my tranny but the sound of manny manny objects increased with rpms. the second thing i thought was i lost my oil pressure and tore up my insides. but there was no CEL?? i poped the hood and left it running. i've heard a few rod knockers in the past but never like the knocking i was hearing. i was a little purplexed. the car sounded like the rods were bent, or the pistons were slamming into the walls, there was no CEL, and the sound i originaly heard haunted me a little. how could i have blown my engine and my tranny with a t25?? so i gave it a little gas while the hood was poped and the sound started to mellow down. WTF just happend?? i realised that i didnt blow anything up enough to call a tow truck and was only 2 miles from home. so i closed the hood and limped out of the parkinglot. on the way home i still heard the rumbling of somthing being thrown around in my engin. so here's the deal. on the way home the noises slowly went away. i have no problem with building boost, i have no CEL, no hesitation. nothing. i have no idea what happend last night. i drove the car to work today at 8am. drove normal. i went past the area all this happend at last night, even stopped looked around, nothing. fucking weird. im going to spend a little time tomarrow trying to figure out what the hell happend. somthing must have come loose and shatterd inside the engine compartment. i have a sneaky suspision it was the lower timing belt cover. we'll see... TsiTalon9587 05-14-2005, 01:37 PM The thought of the center diff comes to mind. They are the weakest link in awd trannies, and are the first thing to go. If you do a lot of launching, it may have weakend it a bunch and eventually let go. 97_3clipse 05-14-2005, 05:39 PM thats what happened to my car acouple days before it crankwalked.....it mad that awful wrapping metalic sound that increased with RPMs, but i didnt have an explosion....so if in the next couple days your motor ceases , it just may be CW.. EclipseRST 05-14-2005, 08:08 PM There are many things to check. Put your car on jackstands (all 4 wheels off the ground) and start the car, put it in gear and make sure everything in the rear is working. If not you know where the problem is, if so then move on to the next thing. Check the fluilds in your tranny, transfer case and rear end for metal chunks or shavings or even what appears to be glitter. If everything is good there you might want to pull the tranny and check out your clutch disk. When I had the center sprung section let go on my car it made a loud pop, then sounds like rocks in a metal can when you roll it. Made a god awful noise from the springs bouncing off the pressure plate and the rest of the parts flopping around in there. Just some things to do and check before you start thinking the motor is toast. It might not be a bad idea to drain the oil and check that too just to be on the safe side. Never hurts to over check things. scottsee 05-14-2005, 10:35 PM weird, weird, weird. when i got in my car afterwork today i wanted to see if i could emulate, hear, feel anything that happend last night. i rolled down the windows, lanched, boosted, ran the car Hard all the way home. awd seems to be working just fine.... boosts normals, oil pressures normal. kinda like nothing happend. so when i got home i poped open a corona, stuck the hog on jacks, took off the drivers side tire and shrouding so i could see the belts and went over the car from front to back. i was supprised to see Nothing!! i checked the oil, no discoloration or shinny fragments. i didnt check the transfer case or tranny becasue i lanched the car 4-5 times from a stop with no problem on the way home. would i still need to check??? it was really odd. i was acpecting to find fragments of plastic but the lower timing belt cover was intact there were nothing missing. whatever it was tore the Shit out of my mr148271 belt. i really dont know which belt that is. its the one on the inside of the "BTDC" closest to the block. all the rest of the belts are in great condition, i did realise i need a new oilpan gasket (what a mess!) i guess i'll take it as a friday the 13th deal and move on. i dont know. weird. i was almost 110% i lost my tranny or engine from the sounds my car was making when it happend. EclipseRST 05-14-2005, 10:40 PM That belt is for the A/C. The outside belt, furthest from the engine is for the waterpump and alternater. scottsee 05-14-2005, 10:42 PM i really wish i knew what happend. thats going to bug me for a veary long time. thanks. kjewer1 05-15-2005, 12:03 AM When you think your car is broke, the worst thing you can do is beat on it more to see if its REALLY broke, because odds are you are going to make it worse. Its really strange how common this behavior is :) Absolutely check all fluids, and if nothing turns up there, check the clutch. Problems that have you on the side of the road thinking you toasted a tranny or motor do not clear themselves up, even if the symtoms lessen or go away. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
