LD9, been out since 96 and problems were more worked out than with the ecotec. The Ecotec is a nice engine for mods, but i have seen first hand what the 2.4L can do. I still am shitting myself when i see Karo run his car.

Re: Re: ecotec vs. z24
I would go with the ecotec since it weighs half as much as the LD9 does. So what if the LD9 has a little more torque; however you do have a good point the LD9 is a bulletproof engine.

Re: ecotec vs. z24
I would take the LD9, just from what I've heard on here. I thought there were more mods out for the LD9 than the Ecotec, or maybe I saw somewhere it took to mods better than the Ecotec. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

being fortunate enough to own both, I can make my decision much easier!
I would have to say Ecotec. It's newer, more refined, more economical and just as powerful as the 2.4. 10 horses and 5 lb-ft of torque ain't that big of a difference. I must say that my '98 Cavalier Z24 was very impressive though. Even for an automatic, it was very responsive and looked sharp. At first I was dissapointed when I learned that GM dropped the 2.4, but since purchasing the 2003 Cavalier with Ecotec and 5-speed manual, I have been surprised since.
Ecotec gets my vote.
PS - GM will soon unveil a new 2.4-liter which is said to produce 170 horses. It will be available in the Cobalt! You know that one will impress!

2.2 = Pushrod 2.2 I4 8V
2.2 Ecotec = DOHC 2.2 I4 16V
Roughly 25 horses in difference (if my math and memory serve me well, which they rarely do)
2003ChevCav - Be specific, its a 2.4 Ecotec. Its also got lovely VVTi. It was orignially going to be in the Pontiac Solstice, as well.

That's right, the ECOTEC 2.4-liter will be made available in the all new Solstice which is due to be out in the near future. 177-horses! Pretty potent! Are you sure GM is going to use the term "VVTi"? This is something Toyota can only use since it is a registered trademark. It will have Variable Valve Timing (VVT), without the I (Intelligence).
Can't wait to see it on the Cobalt.

You do know that Toyota and GM are in bed together, right? I mean, hell, they collaborated on technology and have even swapped cars. Ever heard of a Toyota Cavalier? Same thing as a Chevy Cavalier, except Right Hand Drive and a few other amenities.
Why would that be a surprise? I seem to remember seeing that acronym across the engine of a Vibe at some point in time.

Yes I have heard of lots of collaboration between GM and Toyota. Point is, if we are going to be specific then lets keep it consistent. "VVTi" does not appear on the new 2.4-liter ECOTEC.

I stand corrected. Just remembered that the 140-hp dual overhead-cam 2.2 (ECOTEC) replaced the Z24's 150-hp dohc 2.4-liter in 2002. The engine was then made standard on ALL cavaliers in 2003.

True. Which is why I said it was made available in 2002.
