You might check the front wheel bearings. 2WD or 4x4? I don't know about 4x4's, never owned one, but, I had an 82 Olds that did the same thing. When I pulled the bearings, the left wheel bearing was "Making it's own Metal" meaning the grease was full of metal flakes and the bearing was shot. The fact that it quiets down when turning is what tipped me off that the bearing was the culprit.
I replaced both inner and outer bearings on both sides and no more noise.
