ive got a 1999 civic dx and i was wondering how to get some easy horsepower. i gave it a general tune up when i got it (oil, spark plugs, cables, distributor) and its muuuuuch better. Its already got a nice air intake (sounds like a beast).

So where else can i snag some easy horsepower? I was thinking about a nice loud muffler. I like noise :) and 5 or 10 horsepower sounds good.

so...

1) where can i snag easy horsepower from my civic?
2) What are the most common and/or best mufflers? (i like noise)
3) any other tips?

:disappoin aint no y7 on earth that is anywhere near beast. EVER

buy a d16y8 motor.

a nice loud muffler wont do anything except make it sound like youve got more power, ive heard from racing experts that they can actually hurt your performance. you should go ahead and get a full catback exhaust. there is no way to get a lot of cheap HP out of a civic, even making it breath better with full intake and exhaust might only net 20 horses. the most cost effective way of adding horse power is forced induction or nitrious.

turbo the hell out of it and you'll have some power! And that tip isn't going to do anything but make your car sound like a giant mosquito on steriods. If you're going to do anything w/ the exhaust...cut the muffler off and put a straight pipe in it's place.

Like the guys said before, a muffler isnt going to help you. If you want a few more hp and some sound redo your entire exhaust from the header to the cat all the way back. An exhaust is only as efficient as its more restrictive part.

ummm no not at all..

Nothing beats a roots type blower for easy bolt-on power. (Not that its the best way to get power at all, but its quick and to the point)

...that is, if one even exists for your motor.

You dont lose compression with a free flowing exhaust... you lose backpressure... and that wont affect HP as much as you may lose low end torque if not setup properly... :headshake

An ignition control unit will not add 15 hp, it probably won't add any especially on a near stock civic.

-intake manifold

...and all this might not even be that noticable. after all, all its doing is getting better air flow through the motor besides the cams... you'll probably increase about 25hp at most with all this no matter what the gay boxes/ads say on them. and remember this is for quick and cheap hp, if you want more, forced induction is the way to go

Actually, the cams+manifold combo usually has the potential to give ~15whp alone when dyno tuned. (Assuming the cams' profile is a bit on the aggressive side.)

Hey, this thread blows. Its old like my grandma.

i can personally tell you that short or rebuilding and/ or turboing the engine, you wont have any power. which is why im buying a B18C. then ill be upgraded from dead slow to somewhat quick!!! but seriously. The Civic with D16 has a P/W of 22. With a GSR its roughly 12.5, thats pretty nice.

yea this is a pretty old thread but at least its not like 2-3 years old. D series motors can't do what a B series can so GET A B SERIES!

easy hp.... buy a new engine...? thats what i would do... i have the same car, its not fast by now means... ive had slower though... a nice DOHC would do so much better though...

Easiest way to gain power for around a grand:
Headers(250-300)
Catback exhaust(400-500)
Intake(50-200)
Remove power steering and/or A/C (FREE if you can do it yourself)
Pulley set.(150-250)

when you remove another accersory that the timing belt is turning you free up more power. the less the timing belt is turning the more efficient it works.

the timing belt doesnt power anything your car cannot run without. only belts that can be removed are AC and power steering. you dont gain HP for doing this either, you just free HP that the motor would typically use to power those accessories.

the timing belt runs only the cams and the water pump...if you remove PS then it'll free up the V belts/ serpentine belts on most cars and you'll have more power (generally). You can also buy an overdrive (underdrive?? IDK) pulley kit that makes each accessory spin fewer times which is supposed to free up some power...

Its underdrive. And some people would actually advise against changing those, but that's a touchy subject.
