Clicking when I turn the wheel.

I have a 00 Cavy, when I turn the steering wheel to the left or right there is a clicking in the steering. Kinda like something is binding. I have checked the tie rods they are fine. Dont think its in the front end but does anyone know what this may be? How do I fix it?

Meh, I have an 04 and it does the same thing. I dont think its that big of a problem I actually think its just normal. Unless you have aftermarket suspension then it could be a problem. To date though I have yet to hear a good thing about stock cavalier suspension.

no big deal when your axle flops off and your SOL..

its your CV joints... check the boots to see if they are split or cracked open.

if it doesn't do it straight ahead then it's not your wheel bearings.

first make everything is tight and check the bushings.

Re: Clicking when I turn the wheel.

Agreed. It's the CVs. Usually a first sign that some directly related component is ready for a good checkup. The only other time I've heard this happen to no fault is when the mech used a type of pull-tag/boot bank that engaged the turning wheel and made a clicking sound during turning only.

Re: Clicking when I turn the wheel.

Ok but if a cv joint is bad wouldnt i get a vibration at high speed. I really doubt its the axles but ill look into it just incase but it feels like its in the column itself. Oh yeah and its stock suspension

Re: Clicking when I turn the wheel.

I don't think it's the CV joints either. Try greasing the steering column intermediate shaft (the telescoping part). If it is making a rhythmic click, click, click when turning at slow speeds then I would say it's CV joints.

Does it click when the car is sitting still? If so it could be the column or maybe a bad rack & pinion, if not I'd guess the outer cv joints. Outer cv joints usually wont cause vibration while driving unless they're about to explode, inner cv joint will cause vibration especially when slowing down but wont click but clunk.

Hope that helps

Yeah it does the noise when standing still and when slow speeds like turning a corner. Well its not really a clicking now that i think about it, its more like a pop.

Re: Re: Clicking when I turn the wheel.

does it make the noise when steerinf the wheel back and forth?

if it does just hold the outter tie-rod and turn the wheel if u can hear or feel any play then shes bad... then try it with the car running if it doesnt do it with it running then it should be fine.

Re: Clicking when I turn the wheel.

GM had a TSB about the intermediate shaft popping. If all else checks out, that's probably what it is.
