I've got a '91 Camry V6 (2VZFE). Haynes' manual only provides a method for adjusting the idle speed on 1986 and older vehicles (it only covers up through '91 camry's). It doesn't even mention why the end user can't adjust the idle speed on 87-91 Camry's (unless I'm blind and missed it). Anyway, is there a method for adjusting the idle speed on the '91 V6? Can I just adjust the throttle stop screw?

Somebody mentioned in another post that adjusting the throttle stop screw voids the warranty because they marked the position of the screw with some yellow paint from the factory. But of course, the warranty is long gone so I don't have to worry about that. My only concern is that if something like that voids the warranty, there must be a reason not to mess with the stop screw.

Idle speed is computer controlled. If you are idling too high, it probably means your linkages are getting hung up, or you have a vacume leak someplace. Leave the idle screw alone for now, and look for some other reason. There is a million vacume hoses in there.

I was afraid of that. Technology is great but I'd rather just be able to turn a screw to fix the problem rather than have a computer with the necessary software. I've already checked all the vacuum hoses since I've been wrestling with this problem for about 4 months, they are all fine.

A little more background. 4 months ago my idle speed was FAR too low. The problem developed after the car sat untouched for a few weeks. After failing to find a problem I took it to a mechanic who said everything was fine except for the idle speed adjustment...and he adjusted it, but it was never quite right. So this week I removed the IAC valve and throttle body and cleaned them thouroughly. After replacing them the idle speed was too high. So now I need to adjust it back down. I can take it to a mechanic if its absolutely impossible for me to do myself, but I'd rather not have to.

On another note however, cleaning the TB and IAC valve didn't solve my other problem...the RPM dropping around 200rpm when electrical accessories are turned on. I'm beginning to believe that ALL my problems were electrical in nature...something that I don't have the experience to fix.

The mechanic should have never messed with the stop screw. He must harken back to days of the 60's too when you could fix these things with a spoon. Ok, so find the stop screw. It's there someplace, I've never seen one of your engines, so I don't know specifically where it is. But I'm sure it's there. Yes, it's got some yellow paint on it.
