HOW TO: Converting your P10 G to 5 speed from auto Part 1

First off I'm gonna tell you what you need to buy in the way of parts. Then I'm gonna tell you what to remove from your car in the order that you should. Then I am going to continue with the rest tomorrow cuz I'm pooped

First when you call around for the parts:

Ask for complete tranny
complete clutch (except the clutch disk buy it new)
complete shifter
the brake and clutch pedals
no need for axles they are all the same regardless of VLSD
You can use the parts from NX2000, 200sx se-r if you can't find any G20 parts.

First pop open your hood remove your battery and the plate underneath it, remove your airbox and all hoses until throttle body, disconnect all electrical connections and hoses from your tranny. Next you'll lift the car up to remove your axles, careful the bolt on the ball joint (at the end of the control arm) will most likely be seized on so your gonna need a torch to heat them up and use patience until they come off (this is what will slow you down the most) from underneath remove plastic covers, the bar with the tranny mount on it that passes underneath the tranny and then its off tho the torque converter. You'll find it behind 2 screws on the side of the tranny facing the passenger side of your car. With a wrench turn the engine by one of the belt pully things (forgot the name of it in english) this will expose the 5 bolts on the converter that you will need to remove in order to disconnect the tranny from the car.

From here use caution that tranny is damn heavy. Place your tranny jack underneath the tranny NOW.You will now start to remove all bolts and odds and ends that hold on the tranny. Lower your jack slowly with a helper once you've done that and put the tranny somewhere out of the way.

The rest tomorrow

BTW: I want to dispell a myth about converting. All the parts used are exactly the same and no fitting is needed. Your starter, bell housing, console and even your axles will be fine with your new manual tranny. This job is long but very simple and straight forward. If you know what your doing then this should be easy. I removed all parts needed off the car in 2.5 hours.

Til tomorrow

This has been fun to do!

1. No pics cuz my hands get quite dirty and I don't want to handle my digicam with grimey hands

2. The ECU is tricky I got lucky last time (according to infiniti) It's supposed to be just fine but there is a chance that your ECU won't take it. Being that the tranny is electronic and supposedly has a separate ECU I am assuming that this is why I got away with it the first time.

Like I said I will post the rest tomorrow. As for a write up of the whole operation I will most likely do that burt after posting the details as I have so for I really don't think I'll need to.

Sidenote: I found a few advantages to using an NX2000 tranny.

VLSD (Viscuous Limited slip differential)
Better gear ratios
The tranny is prolly 150lbs lighter than the auto one.

SO I grip more, accelerate more and weigh less. I'm off to a good start

I have a P10 auto and was wondering how much it would cost overall without installation for all the parts? i will get it done from a body shop, but just wanted to know how much all the parts that i would need costs.

It should cost no more than 1500$ (in canadian funds anyway) I recommend if you can find a tranny out of an NX2000 grab it. The performance is nice.

Once I get my new appt worked out and start actually looking for a new job I'll be going into the forum cellar and digging up some of the older HOWTO's and putting them in G20.net.

Right now I'm working on some site building tools that will help me update and maintain the site in the future. So don't expect an update on G20.net very soon. Sorry guys.
