95 Camry Rough Idle
I recently purchased a 95 Camry, 4 cyl. 75 K miles. It idles rough (or just vibrates) when in gear (drive) and stopped due to traffic. In neutral or park it idles smooth. Any thoughts? I have been told it may be the torque rod and/or front mount. If so, what am I getting in to on the front mount? The torque rod seems simple enough.

Re: 95 Camry Rough Idle
Does it idle rough, or does it just shake a lot at the lights? Typically, these cars will shake a lot when they get old because of the inherent design of the transversed mounted engine. A front engine mount will help this situation, but they are expensive. Just learn to enjoy it!

4-cyl Camrys vibrate in gear. It is normal. You feel every piston pulse.

I am new to Toyotas. It is a "vibration" after the engine has warmed. I appreciate the insight. In case I decide to proceed with replacing the front mount, what difficulties am I getting into?

Re: 95 Camry Rough Idle
Replacing the front mount may not help, depending on how bad the vibration is. Even new 4 cyl Camrys vibrate some. Mine did and never got worse, so I ignored it. Other Camrys vibrate less or more, but I have never seen one that didn't vibrate in gear idling, at least a little.

Re: 95 Camry Rough Idle
A new mount cost $100. It shouldn't be to tough to put it in. I would say a mechanic should charge $100 for labor... tops. I never tried to do one because it is a waste of time.

Re: 95 Camry Rough Idle
I used to have the same problem, but I always just stopped in neutral...was that a bad habbit? Personally I don't think it could be too bad, but I'm not sure how different Auto trans are than Manual with constant shifting to/from neutral.

Re: 95 Camry Rough Idle
Putting the trans in neutral is a good idea. Especially when the car is cold, and the engine is running fast. Fast idle stipped at a light will burn up your auto trans. I commonly shift into neutral when I come to a light.
