95 Grand Am Surge

I have a 95 Grand Am GT and the engine started surging 2 days ago. I will turn it on and the RPMs will jump up to 2k right off the bat. I also noticed the day before that it kept surging between 1 and 2k but I turned it off and turned it back on and it stopped doing that.
I have checked to make sure there isn't anything pressing down on the gas pedal and it seems clear.
Any suggestions?

welcome to the forum, lonewolf.

There's lots of things that could cause this. To name a few

bad MAF sensor
bad TPS sensor
vacuum leak
bad / dirty IAC motor
wires / plugs / coil packs

Re: Re: 95 Grand Am Surge

I don't know what MAF and TPS sensors are. I was messing around with it, checking all the cables and I put in Fuel Injection cleaner and it seems to be ok now. It sounds like I have a loose belt though. I might just take it to a pro to take a look at it.

Thanks for the welcome and the advise

Re: 95 Grand Am Surge

The MAF is the mass air flow sensor it senses the flow of air entering the engine. If you run a K&N filter they can get dirty and cause the problem you describe. Have it cleaned by a pro. The TPS is the throttle position sensor. It determines the location of the throttle and sends a signal to the PCM so it can determine how much fuel you need.
