74 Nova tranny issue

A friend is soon to aquire a 74 Nova with an inline 6 (2500cc I think) and automatic transmission. Current owner says the tranny doesn't want to shift out of low unless you feather the accelerator (shifts sluggishly). He was told that this is most often caused by a governor that gets gooped up. The cheap repair is to remove the governor, clean it up and your done.

Has anyone here had experience wih this same issue? Any other insights would be very helpfull also. Sorry I can't provide more specifics on engine and tranny models.

If its a turbo 350, sounds like a problem with the vacuum modulator. They are cheap to replace and an easy fix.

74's only came with 250 cid (cubic inch displacement) for 6 cylinder motors and turbohydromatic 350's for auto transmissions on both 6's or 8's. You can try changing the vacuum modulator. Like Rob said it's cheap and easy. There is also a cable that runs from the throttle linkage to the trans. You can check to make sure it has not snapped. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the feedback but.....

Was just informed that this is in fact a '76, not a '74. Did the '76 models only come with one tranny selection? If not, how can I tell the difference 'tween a 200 (M29), 200C (MV9), 350 (M38) & 400 (M40) which are the available selections on napaonline.com's parts lookup engine? Is there a designator in the VIN that would tell me or a label, like on te door post or something?

I had already told him that he should purchase a vac modulator just to have on hand when we go to look at it (this weekend) and a new or rebuilt governor if we can find one. Of course buying this stuff for the right tranny would be real good, ya think?

thanks again
Steve
