carbureter choke not working

hey guys, im pretty new here, but i recently bought a 72 nova with a 250 l6 with the 1(yes, sadly one,) barrely carbureter. the cars great, i drive it everywhere i can, but theres a problem ive had. the choke thermostat is old and worn out, and i cant seem to find a new one. ive asked around at a few different auto parts stores, and they seem to think that they dont make the part anymore. i was wondering if there was a place to get replacement parts or if you know of a bimetallic choke actuator. it sits on the exhaust manifold and as it heats up it opens the choke up all the way. lately ive gotten around it by driving it for a little bit with the choke all the way on(great mileage as you can guess) and then when its warm enough using a piece of wire to hold open the choke. it works ok but its a pain in the butt.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

ps i dont really wanna buy a whole new carb because im currently building a 350 for it (its going kinda slow) and i dont really wanna drop a lot of cash into an engine i dont wanna keep for very long.
thanks a whole heck of a lot -max-

Re: carbureter choke not working

I would certainly try e-bay or rockauto.com. Rock Auto has alot of stock parts for old cars. You can also try classicindustires.com. In the worst case, if you need the car for everyday use. Try to find a carb that someone just needs to get rid of for cheap. Then you can just buy a rebuild kit for it. That would be the cheapest way. Even a 4 barrle would work, if you tune it right.

-I acutally have a 250 Inline 6 in my nova too. But I have a 2 barrle Weber Carb. Some else did alot of work on the engine trying to get it to run faster, but its not happening. So at the time Im also building a 350. If you need any other help just post it.

Choke replacement

Hi, JC witney carries a replacment choke thermostat for that carb (between 6-12 dollars). They also have a lot of other replacement/rebuild parts. This address will take you to JC's parts search engine, just click on carburetor parts in step 1 and enter your car info on step 2 to find the part http://webepc.com/cgi-bin/sewse?/u/w....cmm+jcwhitney

Hope this helps, Jeremy

Re: carbureter choke not working

LOL, thats cool. I know its definatly possible. Like I would probably get a ton more power if I bolted up a TH350 to my 6. I still have the orignal PowerGlide on it.(lol) My engine has all aftermarket parts from Clifford. Like Intake Headers and I think a bigger cam. All that stuff was done before I bought it.The highest speed I get up too is 60mph. If I really wanted to spend the money I could really beef up the 6. But I already have a 350 im working so I mise well use it.

-Thanks Anyway.
