Buying 330zx

Heres my situation i wanna get a new car or well at least new for me. I currently have a jeep cherokee and love it but i want to get a tuner car so im looking into either a 300zx 2by2, an older like 97 or new a4 1.8t or a WRX either a base one or an STi whichever i can get. Preferably i want to know what you guys would prefer. I realize that this is a nissan forum so i figure there will be a little bias but thats ok.

Well lets look at budget. A Audi 1.8t is going to retail for around 15+ grand. The WRX will run about 27k new, and the STi will run closer to 35k (for that price I would get a G35 or a 350Z). A NA 2+2 300ZX 90-95 will run you about 5-9k and thats about it.

hypothetical statement, lets say you had 40k to spend, if you got the STi, WRX, or the 1.8t you would have considerably less to spend on upgrades and modding. (They are even listed in order from most to least.) If you got a Z32 2+2 (300ZX) for 9K (which is ALOT for a 300ZX) you will have 31K for modding and cash in your pocket. Dont take a brain to figure that the Z is the better bang for your buck out of the three/four you listed. The only thing that comes close is the STi but you are paying for the badge more than anything else. And you get a sloppy first gear with it.
I know becuase I "test" drove one once...... granted I was doing 30-100mph on some really twisty roads testing my ralling skills.

But all in all it comes down to what do you WANT!?

Good luck in whatever you decide.

the only problem I have is I live in Illinois and when it does snow it is a pain to drive a rear wheel drive car because we all ready have a 350Z in my family and I love it but I want something that will be good for all year round driving since my other car is a 65 mustang which wont see rain or snow as long as I can help. But anyway I want to get a decently fast car that wont freak me out in the snow.

a brand new audi a4 is gonna cost you alot more than 15k...i would imagine it would be closer to 30k for base model.

you can pick up a pre 2000 model for anywhere from like 6-15k depending on model.

where do you live in illinois??? and whats your budget??? why does it have to be a 2+2 300zx???

once you give us a budget, i can better answer your question...

300zx's are not good in the snow... even my n/a z31 had its ass end everywhere with premium winter tires... i'd hate to see what a z32 would be like...

Horrible, when i had my z32. I was driving straight, then i hydroplaned. In an instant. Spun around complete 180. Tried to stop up a hill then go foreward because the light turned green, i just spun side to side. had to drive in 2nd gear..

Why not a awd 3000gt?

well all year round a z32 would be tugh i drove my z31 with 235 16 street(not winter tires) and she was a little harry at times but i guess that has to do with experience and on ice i wouldnt expect to move much at all in any rear wheel car but an all wheel drive is the best choice for winter (reasons apperent ) and the fwd would also be good in winter so im gonna go against the grain of the forum lol go with a honda lol be or competition lol
every body has a honda and there are mods redily availible and are supposidly what started this whole TUNER craze but all else aside for all practicleness ity pobably wouldnt be wise to choose a rear wheel for a winter driver and if the choice of cars is the stang well why get a tunner if you got one of them?? dont try to fit in try and go against the grain

good luck and happy hunting

If your looking for something to run in the snow and ice, I suggest a snowmobile. If your looking to run in the mud and crap then a good 4X4. But then you might want to haul shit around, a pickup works fine here.
Now if your looking for a car with good looks, good handling and a hi-performance engine then a Z32 is the ticket.
It's not a snowmobile, 4X4 or a pickup, but a hi-performance car that gets you from point a to point b as quickly as possible with as least effort as possible.

Ive got a 4x4 now and it doesnt have to be a 300zx I just think theyare really cool. But anyways my budget would probably be around 20,000 because i figure im going to take out a loan for the car and Ive got probably 5g's sittin in an account for my jeep which I was going to put a lift kit on. But anyways I dont want a 3000gt because they are pretty heavy and there are a couple of them driving around so I kind of want something not a whole lot of people have. And I live in Peoria to answer k3smostwanted's question.

Zgringo
04-06-2005, 07:46 PM
Then what you've setup for a budget you could have one killer Z32TT and then some.
With your pickup, now all you'll need is a snowmobile, and screw what everyone else says. It's your choice.

I've looked into a bunch of cars that I wouldnt mind getting but the z32 just kind of stuck out to me especially since we own a 350Z which sucks in the snow too. But I'm kinda lookin for a cool car to tune up a little and not be as dumb looking as the civics and del sols (sp?) around here. Which in any case iv i do get into a race i want to be able to beat them which can be kind of hard with some of them. When I first started i was looking ito a '95 M3 but insurace was so much that i would have to pick up another job just to pay for it. So now I am looking for something similar in price but cheaper for insurance.

Hodo
04-06-2005, 08:02 PM
LOL cheaper insurance wise. A 300ZX NA will be cheapest to insure. But for me I can get either for about the same rates, but I have been driving a short while. (10 or so years no tickets, and 3 contries, 2 contentents, across the US 4 TIMES coast to coast, and North to south 6 times.

cool...i was just there a few weeks ago. i live about 50 miles south of chicago near matteson.

anyways, with $20k...i would look at getting a TT and modding it to your liking. you will probably end up only taking out a 15k loan and running on par with corvette's and other higher end sports cars. thats if you really have your mind set on a 300zx...

most people willing to spend 20k would opt not to buy a 300zx because of the age of the car but if thats what you want then get it. i knwo thats what i would do...:D

The only problem I have is that a twin turbo in the winter would probably suck even though there arent many days when we do get snow but when we do I know I would have a hard time driving a powerful rear wheel drive car around. Although it would be cool to be able to whoop up on a vette with something from the early 90's thats pretty much a sleeper.

04-06-2005, 09:40 PM
yeah if you can handle the rear wheel in the winter id do it i was thinking bang for the buck and winter snow and like i said i got the z31 and the civics and i are about even from the ones ive raced (boosted 7 psi newer civic stock b18 tuned comp intake headers and ball bearing turbo)
he jumped off the line and even with his half to whole second head start he didnt pull away
(1st race i missed a shift my bad 2nd race he said hed honk i was reving to put into 2nd and he took off)

but to make a long story short z it all the way and hodo nice record know of any cannonbal runs this year???? how do i enter????
lol just pikin but if you or anybody does you should post it

stephenp

I wish I knew of some cannonball runs that were taking place here. If I can get a car thats worth entering into the cannonball I would do it. I thought about entering it with my mustang but it dont think that would go to well

Well you would be surprised at what is actually in some of these "rallys". A few REALLY expensive cars, and alot of joe average cars that have been mildly modded. The next Gumball rally maybe next year but that isnt confirmed yet, and they may keep it in Europe for a couple of years then come back to the US. And those events arent about how fast you go its about the journy. Also they are quite expensive for the good ones, the gumball I think the last year it was here in the US it was about 6-10k just to enter your car, that doesnt include tickets, bail and fuel. A few of the past pertcipants lost licenses or were deported.

I think I have just about evey Gumball and Cannonball run video there are. One thing you could enter is the players run which I think is always in America. And about the 330ZX that was a typo that i tried to corretct but it didnt let me. What I really mean is 300ZX

what year jeep cherokee are we talking...were you goign to use that as a trade in??? with the money you would save from only taking out a 12k loan for a TT you could keep the cherokee for a winter car...

Well if you really think you have a fast car you could try this. They do it 3 times a year. I plan on trying it in my VH45DE powered 240Z.

I'm afraid these guys run alittle more than the average joe car. The record is 207MPH. I think it costs $5,000 to enter plus you have to have a competition licence, and the car must pass tech. inspection.
It's a winner take all race. Lots of losers.
They run on the highway for 120-150 miles.

Albert I think he ment the Players run not the Silverstate classic. The Players Run is about 10K to enter, I believe check their websight, but I dont care for half of the venues they go to, its all about the "bling" with them.

Albert I have heard of the Silverstate classic, I went to school with a guy who competed in it with his 02 Saleen, He finished 25th with a average speed of 189MPH. He had done about 15K in mods to the Saleen to get it to that level most of them were safety related. the top 3 drivers the year he ran averaged a speed of about 195+MPH one was a F50 Ferrari. I might build a car for that even one day..... Not sure one Nissan Z chassis and body I would start with, probly the Z32 becuase of its better lines and wider stance.

Dude...you need to straighten out your head a bit and kinda think about this a bit a more. Money...purpose...etc...important things to think about before buying a car...especially when living in where it snows. I live in Northern Kenfucky...we got record snow over last Christmas and my (at the time) 86 300ZX Turbo SUCKED ASS! I drove home from work sideways...not a very comfortable feeling driving down the freeway next to other cars...if you live in the snow, get something to prepare for it...be it an AWD car or some truck to drive every day...whatever...prepare for that shit, man. Get a 350Z and get an older latima or maxima (MAXIMA!!!...FWD VG30E!!!...CHEAP AND WILL RUN FOREVER!!!) to drive in the winter. My :2cents:.

Thanks alot Hodo. Thats all I need is a bunch of whinning kids crying cause the can't drive their cars in the snow. sob,,sniff.
It amaizes me cause before 4X4's, front wheel cars all we had was rear wheel drive cars, but then people knew how to drive. I use to drive a Blown hemi 53 Stude. sport coupe around in the black ice and snow, as did alot of my friends. Why? cause that was a way of life then.
Fuck I remember the first pair of shoes I got. Walked backwards all day just to look at my foot prints. And my first tie,,,hell I stood still for 5 hours, though I was tied to a post.
One of the best cars in the world for snow and ice was the VW bug, rearwheel drive.

Yea...good to be back, Delerious. I'm still around...I'm just working ~60hrs a week so I don't have TOO much free time anymore.

I'd try to find an old Max. I love those...always thought they looked cool, they're pretty cheap and they have a VG30. They're FWD so they shouldn't be too horrible in the snow.

 now thats classic right there!!!

anyways, i can relate to you Al...

the first car i learned to drive on was a 95 5-speed S10, RWD...

my first car when i turned 16 was a 88 ford ranger, RWD...

my second car was a 93 mercury cougar, RWD and heavy as hell...

my third car is a 90 nissan 300zx RWD...

my fourth car is an 86 nissan 300zx RWD...

my last car was a 00 pontiac GTP FWD...

i have driven 5 RWD cars all in the winter and only been in one accident. that was because i was being stupid because i drove my 90 Z32 after an ice storm with bald tires, but the important thign is, i did not hit anybody else, just spun it and got a little pissed because i damaged my baby, if the city had the salt trucks out i wouldnt have had a problem though.

and you know i have been in 3 other accidents and none of them were my fault...and guess what, 2 out of the 3 were kids under the age of 18 and the other one was a drunk driver. its true...kids these days are just getting their liscence and handed a brand new car by their parents and dont have any rules...

BTW: i loved my Z31 on the snow...but i had a set of top of the line goodyear snow tires on. that thing was like a big snowmoile. it was fun but totally safe when i wanted it to be...

we dont have "that" bad of winters here, just frigid cold but not alot of precipitation. but we got one pretty big snow storm right after i got the Z up and going and i had a blast...but it was a good packed snow, it wasnt like slush or anything. i caught it right after the snow trucks came trhough and made everything ugly...and the turbo model has a little bit of a HP bump so im sure that wasnt on your side.

i can realte to all of you about rwd in the winter cause thats how I started off to. I had a 98 S10 that was terible it had to damn tiger paw tires on it. and i hated them. But anyways i was just wondering how much worse it would be for a 300zx in the winter and i got the answer. And about 4x4s they arent any better in the winter unless you leave it in 4 wheel drive but then its no fun. Try driftin a cherokee around a turn at 40, its scary as all hell but funny afterwards. And as of right now i think i may go with something all wheel drive since im probably moving to Colorado next year and I dont think the Z would be so good out there.
