New Blazer... need help

I've read a lot of the post concerning low gas mileage but am kind of stuck on where to start. I bought a 1994 Chevy S-10 Blazer LT with the 4.3L vortec V6 vin W a few days ago and noticed that the gas mileage was EXTREAMLY poor. I am currently getting 5 mpg city 10 mpg highway. There is also a slight gas smell in the cab occasionaly. It has new spark plugs and wires and I put some fuel injector cleaner in the tank. I'm thinking about replacing the fuel pressure regulator but decided to seek help before I spent the money to do it. Thanks

What about your catalytic converter? There was a post earlier i think it was under the gas mileage thread that a guy was getting poor gas mileage. Search through the forum you should be able to find what you need to do. Welcome to the forum.

Re: New Blazer... need help

Welcome to the fourm. You could pull the plenum and check for fuel washing from the regulator, injectors and /or nut kit. Is the idle ok? if you have a blip, or stumble, leaking fuel from these components is a good place to begin looking. If power is suffering, the cat would be a good place to start. when it has sat overnight, crawl underneath it in the am and tap it. a rattleing (sp)cat is Not a good cat. Timing could also be an issue. Any codes flashing from the SES light on your dash?

1.) Change your cap and rotor.

2.) Remove your top vortec cover and remove the round IMTV valve under it and peer down into the plenum with a flashlight and check for gas smell, pools of fuel and washed spots that will look a golden color.

3.) Change your air filter, fuel filter and PCV valve.

4.) Have your tiing checked with the timing wire disconnected from the PCM.

Thanks a lot. I've been thinking about changing the fuel pressure regulator but wanted to ask people who were a little more knowledgeable about blazers than me. While I'm at it though I'll probably replace the fuel filter and the cap and rotor. I'll also check the timing. The idle hasn't been rough but it does shake the truck slightly and it idles at 750 (so says the digital tachometer). Also would you suggest replacing o2 sensors or hook it up to a computer first? The service engine soon light comes on occasionally but will turn off and not come back on for a while.

Re: New Blazer... need help

Get your stored codes read. If you buy a Haynes manuel, it can tell you how.As you have a 94, you should have OBD 1. If you do have obd1, you can read them yourself, and that would be the first step. Check out this link.http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=387225 Read the whole thread, and BE SURE that you have OBD 1. If it is OBD2, you can try having it (stored codes)read at Auto Zone.

Re: New Blazer... need help

Also, don't just change the fuel pressure regulator, replace the whole CPI injector and the nut kit which is the fuel lines feeding the cpi injector.
