Unhappy 90 Fox - No Reverse HELP!!

I have a 90 Fox that I just purchased that will not go into reverse. Previous ower stated that the trany was just put in and was previously working in the other car. He thought that he didn't have the linkage adjusted correctly, so therefore it wouldn't work. I disconnected the linkage from the shifter and could manually shift into all of the forward gears, but not reverse. Does anyone have any suggestions????

Re: 90 Fox - No Reverse HELP!!

The linkage is unneccesarily complex & requires a special VW tool to set it properly. Most VW dealers don't even have the tool anymore. It takes alot of trial & error to get it properly set. I would be a bit concerned that you can't find it with the linkage disconnected, it may make more easy to find if the engine is running with the clutch in.

before you go and replace the tranny ( its not fun... i just did) put the linkage back in in the correct order and loosen the plunger ( at the top with the big circular end) and then have a friend hold the shifter handle dead center in neutral and then retighten. i had a similar problem after i replaced some of the linakage and that was how i solved it.

Re: 90 Fox - No Reverse HELP!!

the 90 fox i had for a while had the reverse out on the end like any other trany if its the push down and push in to reverse then its almost imposable to get things right iwith the linkiges unhooked theres two many things that move at once if you havent seen one work properly before my sugestion is find a working trany like yours and watch them shift in to reverse and then try with your tranny im not saying i know what im talking about its just a thought and may save you some time and from buying a new trany if it is the linkeges and just because the trany was working right in the other car doesnt meen they have the right shifter knob on it or that the shiter is even the right one i have come across this more then one in alot ov vws reverse seems to be either under first or down and a little firther out for reverse
