TCC Solenoid a common problem but does not sound like it. When the TCC acts up your car runs normal, but when it warms up it will stall at stops (will act like a standard shift in high gear, jerking etc.). Will restart right away but stall as soon as put into gear until cools down. Since you have idle troubles there are several potential items to look at. Vaccuum hoses, Idle Air Control, EGR Valve, Throttle position sensor, and the MAP sensor. If I were you I would try to see if there are any trouble codes stored in the computer to help isolate the problem. Getting a manual of any kind is a good idea. Check all vaccuum hoses, leaky lines will cause idle problems. Clean the idle air control valve (has two small screws and a plug in, should be on/near your TB. These get dirty and will cause problems. The MAP and Throttle position sensor I would not deal with unless you get a trouble code first. They are not expensive but may waste money for nothing. Clean the EGR. I seem to remember my son's 89 actually had the EGR plugged off so wasn't used. Did not hurt it, but get another opionion on that.. His 89 developed a bad idle and we found a bad vaccuum leak. Also a dirty AIC. Ran well after that. Main thing- get checked for codes stored. Buy a cheap plug in tester from Advance, Autozone, etc. And get a manual.
