Transfer case or what?

New and glad to be here. Have been reading here for quite some time and can see there is a lot of knowlege available. Hopefully someone has an answear or suggestions to my problem. Vehicle=1995 c/k silverado, 44,000 actual miles.

When i engage the transfer case to the four wheel low range and briskly apply the accelarator the engine revs up but the truck does not move until you let off the gas and the engine revs down, at which time it abruptly engages. In repeated attempts the truck continues to behave in this manner until shifting back to the high range. In the normal drive setting as well as the four wheel high mode the truck appears to shift and function normally. If this problem would require a major overhaul to fix i guess my main concern would be whether this could eventually cause problems in the normal and four high ranges as well, if nothing is done to correct this. This is a stock truck with the exception of a street performance power chip by hypertech being installed shortly after the truck was new, (talked to original owner) but i can't see how this could contribute to the problem. As i purchased this vehicle used, and being the third owner i have no idea how long this condition has existed, and the previous owner denies of ever knowing it existed at all?? Any ideas?

Re: Transfer case or what?

No, there is no grinding sound and once it does engage applying the brake can't keep it from moving when stepping on the gas . No i haven't changed t-case fluid yet but as i said it performs normally in the high positions. pahoo31.

Re: Transfer case or what?

I have seen this problem before. My father has a 1994 GMC K1500 with the same problem you have. Everything else works with the exception of 4 low engaging poorly. It is possible a power or vaccum line came disconnected. I have an electronically controlled case so I don't have this problem, it's mainly on the slightly older vaccum T-cases. I have a friend with many off-road buddies and he has seen this before too. Check all your lines to make sure they are connected. It really doesn't hurt the other gear ranges by the way, it just makes shifting into 4 low a pain. It's a standard problem. By the way, welcome to the forums.
