Oil Leak - Cam seal replacement

I have a oil leak on the passenger side, rear head. The stealership says it's a cam seal but it's not covered under warranty since I'm the second owner and the car has 85K in miles. Question I have, is this replacement something I can do? I'm pretty handy with a wrench, but never tore in to heads on a car. Has anyone replaced the seals themselve? Any mechanics have thoughts? I appreciate all thoughts and comments.

Re: Oil Leak - Cam seal replacement

Boschmann,

Might help if post the type of engine huh! Engine is V6, 30v. Talk to another dealer and price is right at 900.00. For RR of a valve gasket and seals, seems WAY to high. Thanks for any help.

Unhappy cam seals

veedubmechanic,
'00 Passat, V6 30V -Took it in (non dealer) to replace water pump. They R&R the pump, timing belt, belt tensioner, coolant and an $85.00 vacuum hose. $890.00 total. Get it home and it's leaking oil big time.
It's coming from up front. Would a new belt and tensioner cause the cam seals to leak or is it possible the belt was overtightened during installation?

Re: cam seals

naw, cam seals are major prob on vw. the old style (grey) does not have an oil control ring (stupid design). The new style (black) does. normal labor is 8hrs replace 6 cam seals 2 cam plugs, 2 cam asj gaskets and v/c gaskets. along with some black vw gasket maker applies in "special" places. It does require special tools (can be aquired on e-bay for 160.00) Its not TOTALLY difficult, but if you have abilities to do a t-belt you can do cam seals.
