I need some help solving my throttle body problems with my 96 jetta gl with 160 k miles on it. It was running very rough and cutting out while driving and also normally dies when I try to let it idle so I took it to the dealer and they told me that it needs a new throttle body. I'll be going 55 mph and it will just basically die until I downshift into 4th which will sometimes get it going again. They said this would cost $450. I can't really jusify spending this much on this old of a car but I"m kind of in a jam right now and need the car to last another 6 months to a year.
My question is does anyone know a place I could get a cheaper throttle body or is there some way to clean it really good that would help me get by for a little while without dropping that much cash?
Could someone walk me through the steps of cleaning the TB?
Just pull the intake valve off of the TB and spray it with throttle body cleaner really well. Then take a toothbrush to it. I was told (Boschmann) that it may not start right away cuz of flooding.
