Question Towing a Tracker

I read that the 4wd w/automatic can be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground with the transfer case in neutral. I'm wondering why you have to have manual front hubs tho. Is there something about the way the auto hubs engage when you shift from normal 2wd?
Sure don't want to mess anything up.

This info comes directly from gm service manual also if you read your owners manual it tells you how to tow your vehicle.
Tracker Models
Notice: Locking the steering column when towing your vehicle may damage the steering column. Always unlock the steering column before towing.

Important:

• Two-wheel drive Trackers cannot be dinghy towed. Two-wheel drive models MUST be towed with the rear drive wheels on a dolly.

• The towing speed must not exceed 90 km/h (55 mph).


In order to properly dinghy tow a 4WD Tracker, follow these steps:

Set the parking brake.
Shift the transmission into Park (AT) or second gear (MT).
With the ignition key in the ON position, move the transfer case to Neutral. Make sure the 4WD indicator on the instrument panel cluster is Off.
Turn the ignition key to ACC in order to unlock the steering wheel.
Release the parking brake.
Stop towing the vehicle every 300 km (200 mi) and do the following steps:

Start the engine of the towed vehicle.
Leave the transfer case shift lever in Neutral.
Shift the transmission to Drive (AT). For vehicles with MT, leave the transmission in second gear with the clutch engaged.
Run the engine at medium speed for one minute to circulate the oil through the transfer case.

I tow my 2wd automatic Tracker behind my RV and I drive long, long distances. Takes about 10 minutes to disconnect the drive line. It only has 4 bolts. I secure the drive line to a metal strap with 2 screws and wing nuts. No biggie. I bought the Tracker just for purpose of towing because it's so light weight. I bought a couple of tail lites from Kragen and made brackets for them. The taillights are completely independant of the Tracker's wiring. I put the gear in PARK so that sucker won't move when I'm towing. Gotta have the key in the ignition so it turns and follows the big whale! OF COURSE YOU CAN BUY A DRIVE LINE DECOUPLER KIT AND HAVE A SHOP INSTALL IT FOR $2000!! . . I'd rather use that there dough for gas!
