68 Dodge Dart

I recently just purchased a 1968 Dodge Dart GT convertible. It has 318 with a 4spd on the floor. All original, numbers matching car. I was told this is an extremely rare car? 1 out of 26? Is this true? Any help would be great. Thanks

From the sounds of it, oyu have yourself a VERY nice car, however, I'm not sure how true it is, it very well may be, but the muscle car club said that it's not one of the 46 rarest muscle cars... here's the link to the list... http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclec...s-rarest.shtml

Re: 68 Dodge Dart

That 1 of 26 is a bit misleading. A lot of people like to brag like that, but what they have done is broken it down way deeper than most people care.
For instance in your case, there were probably around 4000 dart convertibles made.
Of those, say 1000 were gt's, of those gt's, 500 came with 318's, of those say 200 were 4 speed cars.
Of those 200 cars, 26 were made in your color combo. Thus 1 of 26. When in reality people would look at it as at best, one of 200, but most would see 1 of 4000.

I would agree with you that most cars are broken down too much when referring to rarity. I mean, my Super Bee is probably 1 of 1 440 six pack 1970 Super Bee with the automatic, ramcharger hood, 3.23 Sure Grip, power steering, AM radio, bench seat and disk brakes in F8 dark green metalic with a black vinyl roof, but it is probably more reasonable to say that its one of 1072 1970 440 Six Pack Super Bees or even one of 473 '70 six pack automatic Bee's.

In your aforementioned example, I would think that one of 200 is fair. Year, Model, Performance trim (I.E. GT, SS, GS, 442, etc.), engine and transmission would seem to be reasonable when discussing production numbers.
