regulator

can anyone tell me how to wire up a regulator correctly? i had an alternator and im just using the generator until i can afford a new one. after i wired it, the generator light stays on even when the car is off. i need to know what goes to what. any help?

is there a special way that the points should be set? The light wont go on unless u take off the cover and touch the top of the coil of copper. but when i take the battery off the car dies. any help?
