high Idle at stop with brake on in drive

My 93 cavalier has a high idle when it is in drive at a stop with the brakes applied. If I shift it to neutral (Automatic) or reverse the tork from the high Idle goes away. I'm not sure what the rpm's are when this happens but it is puting undue wear on the brakes I'm sure. I was told that it could be the EGR valve but I don't want to just start replacing components when I 'm not sure what the problem is. I think the idle problem would still be there when I'm in reverse and it isn't. Any body?

fixed high idle

I adjusted the idle screw out about a half turn. This is the only adjustment on the throttle body. I also cleaned the throttle body where the choke damper is. It alowed the choke to close further and tame down the idle pretty much. Hope this helps.
