What symptoms have you been showing, in addition to check engine light?
i.e. studdering, hard shifts, etc.
Is it a manual of an auto?
I dont know of any easy tranny checks, but I'm no tranny guru. List as much info. as you can, it will help you get an accurate response.

Re: Trouble Code 11
code list - http://www.differentracing.com/tech_...ttc_chart.html
the codes will blink on the "SHIFT TO D2" or coolant light, depending on year.
transaxle codes are for auto trans only

Re: Trouble Code 11
well the tranny is not shifting and it will get up to however many rpm's and not shift sometimes if i back off and try again it will shift, sometimes it wont. I am wondering if this could be in any way related to the egr being bad, becasue I can drive for a half hr and the tranny will shift fine, no problems at all but then as soon as the ses light comes on it starts acting up, and the 2 codes it storing are code 32-egr and code 11-transaxle codes
if its not related i guess they just both decided to go out at exactly the same time

From what I'm seeing, it seems that your throttle valve cable is out of normal adjustment, it will prevent shifting at the correct times and would explain why if you let off and try it again it may shift for you.
This is most likely your problem, but...
Check/ clean your egr, if its unrelated you will have to deal with it later anyway, and its not hard to test and clean.
Repost if you need help with these procedures

The check for the VSS is to unplug it (it is in the differential part of the trans.) and check to see if the PCM is sending it +10DCV, if it is not getting this voltage, the problem is your PCM.
I don't know of another test except replace the sensor, Might try a junk yard as it will be less expensive.
Yes, it is also responsible for telling the PCM when to have the tranny shift. And controls the fuel delivery system, which could throw an EGR code.
So there is a good chance this is your only problem

Re: Trouble Code 11
have you read the transaxle codes yet?
the VSS plays a HUGE part of the shift timing. its not going to shift into anything but 1st when stoped, and its not going to down shift when you are going 95 MPH. there are some codes that will put the car into a "limp home" mode. or in other words it will go into a default mode that will allow the car to remain driveable with minimizing any chance of damage. so you can drive to a repair shop instead of geting towed in. for example, it the computer sences a problem with the transmission, it will not allow the trans to shift or lock-up the TTC. it will stay ether in 2nd or 3rd (depending on make/model) this way you can drive with just one gear, you can't drive great, but you can drive.

Mysatilac the auto's used in the saturns are more like manual trans. with electric shifting. No TV cable like conventional automatics. Would like to get into one to check it out but hopefully not my daughter's.
Kpot2004,

I haven't had to tear into one either (I hope its not your daughters either),
That suggestion was straight from a generic saturn diagnostic manual,
Thanks for the info, I won't soon forget,
