I read in another thread about aftermarket pcv valves causing oil burn, I occasionally get a puff of white smoke out the tailpipe, this happens both on acceleration or deceleration. The oil consumption rate seems to vary so maybe the pcv is erratic??? I hope this is the case as I need this car to last and don't have much money for reapirs but know I better spend some for the preventitive maintnance.

PCV Valves are calibrated for specific aplications. I have also been told to stick with OEM PCV's. It is a minor investment. Saturns do have some oil consumption issues. 1 quart per 1000 miles is within an acceptable range. There is a factory service bulletin regarding a top end treatment for reducing oil consumption. Alway remeber to check the oil.
Fill it with oil and check the gas. :biggrin: A joke from before there was self serve.

pick up a OEM PCV next time you are at the dealership just incase.

177,000 miles! You are definitely doing more than something right. MY sc2 has 115,000 and uses 1 quart about every 1,600 give or take.

Preventitive maintenance=fewer surprises and less expense.
My routine is very cheap and most times free.
Check the oil at fill up time. Every time if you have consumption issues.
Change the oil at regular intervals.
Every time you add oil look around while the oil is being poured. Check the belt, hoses, trans fluid, and vacuum lines(brittle or gummy).
Every time you wash your auto look over the tires,undercarraige(leaks),lights, and wipers.
Every time you rotate tires check the brake pads/shoes, the brake lines/hoses, cv boots, and inner tie rod boots.Once every year I'll clean the boots and wipe them down with a rubber restorer(armour all or brake fluid).
Our safety inspection in Pa. takes care of the suspension, steering and fluids.
Best preventitive measure are smply looking.

Two biggest ways to start bummin rides and spending $$$$$ are run to low on oil or to overheat. Change oil, coolant, thermostat, and trans fluid at prescibed intervals.Cleaning the throttle body,idle air control valve, egr valve and pcv are cheap and provide for better performance=less gas.

One thing I always overlook is brake fluid. Because dot 3 hold moisture it is recommended to change it every so many miles or so many years. It will help keep the seals fresh and prevent rust/gunk from gumming up the whole deal.

cheap/quick way to check your PCV valve is to see if it rattles when you shake it.
If it doesn't then it has become gunked up with oil.
