2000 passat temp gauge

We have a 2000 passat with a turbo 4 and the temp gauge isn't registering at all. After doing some searching here I see that the temp sensor tends to go bad on these so I guess I'll try replacing that first.

Can someone tell me where it is on this motor?

Also, the coolant was a little low. Shouldn't I get a warning for this?

Thanks for your help

Temp sender is on the back of the engine by the fire wall.

Get a thing of coolant when you buy the sensor.
