Hello new here.

Yesterday I tried to change a water pump and timing belt in my 1995 Trooper 3.2l SOHC with 106k miles on it. Everything came off OK (broken timing belt covers are OK right?) but while replacing the T-belt I rotated the sprockets trying to make the lines line up.

Here's the facts.
I dont know what I'm doing.
It's a NAPA belt.
All three gears most definatly moved.
I don't have work till Tuesday.

Question Number 1
The tick marks on the passengers side sprocket seem to be at around "7 O'clock" but the Chilton’s book says it should be at "9 O’clock" Should I base the alignment on where the book says or what I see?

Question Two
Am I supposed to line up the TEAL (green) colored paint marks with the small thin notch on the back of the timing cover? There are also maroon paint marks in random places in the back of the cover. There are also two big groves in the sprocket itself. What are the correct marks to line up?

So how do I align the timing now that I have rotated all three parts independently?

Question IV
If The cam is off by 360 degrees how do I know?

To compound the frustration The White lines on the NAPA T-Belt are no where near the Teal paint mark, Notch on the back of the plate OR the two big notches on the sprocket. AFTER I match up the dotted line with the cam gear. Also Chilton’s says when reinstalling the T-belt that the key should be straight up. What am I missing?

The problem I have is that the sprocket seems to JUMP right past where it needs to be. AND the White lines don’t match up anyway. They are off by at least an inch. The belt is the right one and the numbers match the one that I took out.

I have decided to also order a new tension pulley after reading what others have said. I will also be ordering new belts all around and a new thermostat, anything else I need?

I put in a napa timing belt kit yesterday on my 96 rodeo, 3.2 sohc. Took me about 8 hours, but I take my time. Took care of all the ticking issues. Truck runs awhole lot beter. I dont know what to tell you if you moved the sprockets. Hopefully someone can help you.

I dont know if you solved your problem yet but i would go with what my book says it is a haynes. first your 1 to tdc that is your piston. turn your crank until it tops out check with rod or what ever you have. then you are supposed to start there and work your way around. the cams are marked or I should say gears with a little line and the back of the cover should have a dimple mark. make sure nothing move and let your tightner go. move your piston to tdc again and check your marks you are good to go.

I just changed out everything on my 97 Isuzu 3.2L just like you are doing. I used all NAPA parts they all worked GREAT, except for the auto tensioner (factory only). everything "twocool" said is right, I have that same manual, you may want to e-mail Amigo-2K, the moderator he has a lot of helpful post. You sure dont want to do anything until you are completely POSITIVE. What happened to you was my biggest fear when I tore mine down.........GOOD LUCK!
