humming noise in 96 cavalier

My 1996 cavalier is making a humming noise in the left front end (driver's side). I have changed the wheel hub assembly twice ( thought maybe the first one was bad) and switched the tires around and it is still doing it. It makes this noise even when the car isn't down on the ground. We jacked it up and put it in drive and when the front wheels would turn it would make this noise. Can anyone help me?

Re: Re: humming noise in 96 cavalier

we checked the brakes, replaced the brake shoes on both sides and adjusted the calipers.

Re: humming noise in 96 cavalier

i was going to say more, but the website crashed or my connection did. it might be inside of your rack and pinion. check the boots on both sides for cuts of any kind, if there is a cut, the grease could have leaked out causing it to be noisy.

Re: humming noise in 96 cavalier

cv joint poss, check the other side as it may just be transmitting vibration unless you have definitely heard it from that one side. do you have aftermarket rims that could possibly be fouling something?! if it's when turning it's prob cv joint, check boots fro cracks or slits and if you can take off the hub carrier assy then play with the outer cv to feel for grinding etc
