See my thread on Loud Lifter Knock for the exact procedure, however, to answer your question, I used the "GUNK" brand. Cost about $2.50 USD for approx. 35 ounce bottle. The bottle says 5 minute Flush but I would leave it in 30 minutes AT IDLE ONLY.
DO NOT REV THE ENGINE WHILE THIS STUFF IS IN THERE.

GM has a good cleaner. Its called I think engine crankcase cleaner. I have had extremely good results with it. SAme idea as all the rest, pour it in, run the engine at idle for a certain amount of time, and drain it. Its very strong, and can be picked up at a GM dealer parts outlet.

Here is what I did:
Buy the "Gunk" brand engine cleaner and the cheapest 5W-30 oil on the shelf. Drain the oil and install a new (Cheap) filter and add the new cheap oil along with the Gunk flush being carefull not to overfill the system. Start and run the engine 30 minutes AT IDLE. Drain the the system again and dump in a 1/2 qt. of castrol GTX 5W-30 while the drain plug is out to flush any remaining cheap oil/flush out. Install the oil pan drain plug, then fill the system with Castrol 5W-30 and a brand new AC-Delco Filter. You should not have any more lifter noise.
So cleaning one out like that doesn't hurt the bearings in the engine or anything? I've always been a little hesitant about cleaning out my engine. I have a little over 80,000 on mine right now, and I don't think it would heart it to be cleaned out. I get a little lifter noise sometimes after starting it when it's been sitting for a while, and I always use Valvoline 5w-30 motor oil. Maybe it's just timr for a cleaning.

Do you use an orange Fram filter?

Auto-Rx is a safe alternative to solvent-based engine flushes. The 5 minute solvent flush may break off chunks of sludge and clog oil passages. Auto-Rx is a slow process, taking 1500 miles to dissolve layer by layer of sludge.
Take a look at a test by a skeptical user who thought Auto-Rx was snake oil. Go to www.rms13.com.
There is also a discount coupon code floating around: ARXOF.

Cleaning is important.
I cleaned mine too.
In my situation, a big difference was made by the cleaning.
