I just got this beautifil SUV. I was just wondering if you had any tips to what engine/trans oil to use, what's the best gasoline, coolant fluid? Any other tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 94 ZJ 5.2L V8. I assume you have the quadra-trac (all time 4 wheel drive transfer case). I would recommend switch all your fluid (Engine, Differentials, And Transfer case) to synthetic except for the transmission Fluid.

I use Mobile1 SuperSyn 10W30 engine oil, Mobile1 full synthetic gear lube in the rear diff, and I have Valvoline Synthetic fluid in the front diff (only because autozone didn't have the right weight of gear lube in the Mobile1 for the fornt). and swithc to a Synthetic fluid equivilent to DexronII automatic transmission fluid for the TC.

I think the most important of all of these is switching the TC fluid to synthetic especially if you have the Quadra-Tarc transfer case, this will help prevent the Viscous Coupling from failing.

Just about any coolant fluid will work, and the best gasoline is unleaded. But you can never go wrong with Premium. As far as the engine goes, if you have the 4.0L Inline 6 (ny 95 CG has that), you will have no major problems for a while. What engine is it, 4.0L Inline 6 or 5.7L V8? How many miles does it have? Mine has 107,000 and I've never had any major problems with it. I have never had any stalling, engine dying or anything besides the ocasional sputtering. The V8 is more problematic, though.

Anyways, the I6 will last for a long, long time. The V8 will last, but not as long.

well I disagree, my 5.2L lasted 190,000 miles before I had any major problem and that was due to an extreme overheating problem and the only reasonI never got the overheating problem fixed was b/c I wanted to drop the new engine I had in it.

The Chrysler 318 is an awesome engine. I've seen many Grand Wagoneers with 300,000+ miles on them and no major engine problems.Engines are meant to last so if you do the scheduled maintenence then you won't have any problem. I mean, the I6 is a great engine, but they are known for bad head gaskets especially the newer ones, I've done 3 head gasket replacements on these engines. But like anything, if you don't take care of it it won't last.

No, I didnt mean that the V8's are bad, Im sure they work just fine. But What I meant was that I've heard of more problems with the V8 compared to the I6. But every engine will have its problems.

I understand that, I wasn't criticizing you nor did I mean for it to be taken in that way.

I wouldn't spend all kinds of money on sythetic oils for everything. If you keep the fluids clean they will perform properly. I use 5W30 engine oil between november and march due to the cold weather and 10W30 the rest of the year. The transmission takes ATF+3. The differentials use 80W90, but you could put something heavier in the rear if you plan on towing a lot. The transfer case takes the basic tranny fluid, but you can use the ATF+3 if you like......no added benefit to this. Regular unleaded should do fine.
