Ball Joint

Sup Guys,

So my Upper Ball Joint on the driver side decided to rip through the metal socket today. That was fun. So I towed it back home. I know I wrote a thread about Ball Joints last time. Ive heard some things about replacing Ball Joints and everyone says you cant do it yourself and I need a Press to do it. Do I really need a press? Ive heard people do it by themselves and it isnt that hard to do or should I just get it done professionally. At this point I really dont feel like spending the money. I just got 350 Block the other day and spent money on a engine stand. Worst weekend ever!! But im in good sprites.

-Anyway thanks for any help and advice.
-Take Care
-Cliff

68 Nova: I thought the ball joints where held in with 3 bolts on the upper A-arm. Bushings need to be pressed in and out. I would think it's the same as my 68 Chevelle. Let us know what you find.

Re: Ball Joint

uppers are rivited in you need to drill them out, the rivit that is, new joint comes with bolts. if you have access to a acetaline torch its even easier. just cut the tops of the rivits off and use a pinch and punch them out the rest of the way. then just put new one in with bolts supplied, use lock washers and i like to use locktight to. now geting the joint out of the tie rod may be a little tuffer. i used a concreat block and a 4lb hammer, take nut off turn so its set close to the block edge then give it a good wack or 2. the torch may come in handy here too. heat up tie rod not bolt then thump joint.

Re: Ball Joint

Naw mine arent rivited, I just need to replace them, but I cant get them out. I asked a few people and they said you can buy a Ball Joint press from Kragen or find one online that is pretty inexpensive. They look like a big C clamp. So I think thats what im going to do.
