Highway Speeds Only (Pulsing, Winding, Grinding, Slowing)tStar 03-04-2005, 06:35 PM Hello Everyone.... I am looking for some help on the following: My Car: 1993 Grand Cherookee Quadra-Trac (all time 4 Wheel Drive) Recent Drive-Line Oil Service (2,300km's ago): Diff - Front & Rear Transfercase Transmission Problem: About 5 days ago, while driving down the highway....I experienced...well...the best way I can describe is....a; winding, grinding pulsing and slowing down of my Jeep. The problem appears to be coming from the centre towards the front of the car, and this only happens after about 10 -15 minutes of continuous driving at highway speeds. The moment I pull off the highway and on to city streets, you would never know there is a problem. It just does not exist, until I resume continous highway speeds. I returned to the dealer to try and trace it back to the types of oils used in the service....however...they test drove it and experieced what I was experiencing (only at highway speeds) and concluded that it attributed to a failing Viscouscoupling in the Transfercase. I'm not of the same believe, simply because all transfercase problems I am aware of....are not consistent with what I am experiencing. If it is the transfercase.....Is there any oil additives or other oils (other than the ATF+3) I can use to remedy my problem. Thanks for any advice.... Cheers! dksob81 03-05-2005, 01:31 AM well it does kinda sound like the VC failing, alot of people have had a problem when driving on Highway, get binding while turning, altho you do not have these symptoms I think your problem might be a VC as well. Try changing you TC fluid to a synthetic equivilent to the DexronII thats recommended. This should help your problem. tStar 03-05-2005, 01:46 AM well it does kinda sound like the VC failing, alot of people have had a problem when driving on Highway, get binding while turning, altho you do not have these symptoms I think your problem might be a VC as well. Do have a brand of Synthetic oil in mind; and how many litres does it take? Thanks. dksob81 03-05-2005, 06:46 AM Royal Purple, the book says 1.18 Liters (2.50 Pints). tStar 03-05-2005, 10:51 AM Royal Purple, the book says 1.18 Liters (2.50 Pints). I was just talking tot someone else about my problem and your suggestions.....and they mentioned "Lucas Semi-Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid". Any difference between the results of this and Royal Purple I may expect? dksob81 03-05-2005, 03:50 PM No I don't think there will be much Difference, I always recommend Royal Purple b/c it has been proven to be a good product. tStar 03-12-2005, 06:33 AM No I don't think there will be much Difference, I always recommend Royal Purple b/c it has been proven to be a good product. Well...I tried Royal Purple in the Transfer Case. I also tried Lucas Synthetic in the front Differential, and still no change. I also notice that fluids have started to come out the right axle area, which was identified as diff fluid. When checked, the level was fine....replaced seal anyway and added the Lucas....problem still exists. I do not believe it is the transfer case that is the problem....I am leaning towards front diff pinion....... Any further thoughts? Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
