Crude, but effective home Mod.Frogbones 03-01-2005, 10:51 AM I was lookin at the "cool air-intake" aftermarket intake on a site for a 2.5RS. Well I looked at the design...and thought "I can do this myself" without paying the $140 for that. :sly: I already had a K&N air filter in the box(cleaned it and recharged). So I took out the stock intake tubing(makes for alot of space :naughty: ). I went to Lowes Hardware. Got the same diameter, flexible air duct tubing and put one end on the mouth of the airfilter box, and put the other end in the fender so it can pull cooler air in from out side. Same concept as what this site was promoting. Except I spent $12.86 for the tubing, and a metal clamp (to clamp on the mouth of the airfilter box), also three large plastic ties to secure it, so it won't move, or vibrate around. :sunglasse Good idea? Or askin for trouble? SO, all I need to do is get a Cat-back system...though I'll just get the from the proper place. SabreKhan 03-01-2005, 05:00 PM Um... I hope you didn't attach a piece of plastic to the intake of the turbo. It gets rather hot, and plastic melts at a pretty low temperature. If you did, you're going to be spending a lot more than $140 for the cool air intake. You're going to have to buy a new turbo after it sucks in all those little melty plastic droplets, and possibly a new motor after it sucks in the burnt-up little melty droplets. LOL....heh.......There is no plastic involved(not really)..It's all alluminium(sp) the duct is....so is the clamp that I sercured the duct to the mouth of the filter-box PLus I don't have a turbo...03 2.5RS is what I have. No turbs' on those. The only plastic I used was the large zipties that I secured the duct to the fender wall so that the tubing won't move around while I'm in motion, or going over bumps. I took temp into mind since I drive in Houston traffic everyday. The ties are a fare distance away from any major heat source. So I don't think I'll catch fire...or have plastice droplets enter my intake. Frogbones 03-02-2005, 11:09 AM Do you know anything about the grade of aluminum that is? No...it the kind of ducting that dryers use. Like I said I took the temp issue into account when I baught it. I test the same kind of duct in the fire place when I had a fire going......it stood up fine to the temps of white hot coals, and burning logs.....I did change color but it's integrity held. I don't think I'll be reaching the same tamps as that fire place did. So I'm confident that the "Grade" of Alluminium(sp) will hold for a while. Having said that, a little contraption like that probably wouldn't have any significant gain, except for some placebo effect... Frogbones 03-02-2005, 04:05 PM Actually.....It does have an effect. Small, but noticable. I have a cleaner acceleration, smoother shifting, and no hesitation when when coming out of a shift. When at freeway speeds 70mph...if I need to speed up I really don't have to downshift to get an immediate response anymore. I just simply give it more gas, and it jumps to 75-80 before you know it. :iceslolan Mybe I should post a pic so you guys have a clearer perspective of what I'm talkin about.
