is it normal for the fuel pump to make a whinny noise?
iv a 93 4.3 cpi///////// the fuel pump makes a whine........high pitched..
its done this since i got the truck.........
iv asked a few people and they say its common for this truck........
could use a few more oppinions.............
its got 146k..........on it............
runs.......fine.....just wondering.........if its about to die

yes it is 100% normal, you should hear it when you turn the key foward into acc position, let the whine cut off, its the fuel pump primeing, and the whineing you hear is the pump at work, when you quit hearing it come back, thats when you have your problem

if it starts getting noisier then it's working harder... so it's time to change the fuel filter

im jw, but how do you change the fuel filter??? i see the housing, but seince i have undercoated, i dont want to stuble through doing it wrong this time

93 2.8L 75,000 Miles. Fuel pump doesnt whine (yet).

kool....thanks for the info.............
the whine is the same as it was when i got it.....
changed the filter about 1000k ago........
was the same sound level before and after.......
the mechanic said the filter wasnt dirty....but i changed it anyway...just for piece of mind....
anyhow....again.......thanks for the info.
btw........if you change the filter your self....where eye protection!!!
the mech that changed my filter has a lazy eye now

Look for a little screw with a hex head that comes down through the frame rail from the top and secures the wrap-around strap.

There is a sock or pre-screen at the pump itself in the fuel tank. Sometimes that is partially clogged which is forcing the pump to overwork and make more noise.. if that is the problem may as well wait till it fails and then change pump and screen anyway. Some pumps make noise when running normally...either way, I have just waited until they fail..it's a pita to remove the fuel tank so you just wait till you have to do it. The fuel filter can also cause the problem but it is easier to change and see if it reduces any overwork noise..
