89 s-10 cutting out

My dad's 89 4.3L S10 has this strange problem. When he starts it up in the morning it will start up then just cut out right away. But after a little bit it will start up and run fine for a while. Everything seems to be working ok. Fuel pump is brand new. Any ideas?

So when you first start it up it'll cut out after a few seconds....then when you try to start it again it'll start up fine?

It sometimes takes a few tries, but eventually it will run fine.

I suggest changing your spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and plug wires. This problem is usually caused by something wrong with the ignition system. Changing these parts should solve the problem.

Re: 89 s-10 cutting out

I don't have a book with fuel injection but I'd look into the fuel system first. you probably haven't changed the fuel filter in way to long, so that's where I'd start.

Then if it still happens look into everything fuel related that affects cold starting.

ignition systems will usually just leave the truck running rough, but sykopenguin is partly right, a good tune-up will probably help your s-10 start better and run better

If it was as simple as a tune-up i wouldn't have even posted anything on here. And I can tell you that it isn't ignotion problem because all of that was changed about a month or so ago. And it isn't a fuel problem, the injectors are sprying fine. And plus if it was one of those the truck would run like crap all the time. Once it gets started and stays on it runs great. Right now we think it might be the Idle Air Control Valve.

well you didnt give them much to go on. not trying to be shitty, but when you post a priblem, you need to include things done and ckecked since the problem
originated. i gives us more to go on and cancel out.
you wouldnt believe some of the people that come on here and give less than half the info needed. and alot seem to overlook needing a tuneup. thats why one of the first things mentioned or asked is tuneup.
why do you suspect a iac valve?

We thought is was that because when we had our scanner hooked up to the truck we thought it might be stepping down too quick. But we just replaced and it is still doing the same thing.

Re: 89 s-10 cutting out

did you change pump because of this problem or was it for an other one? i believe too that it is a fuel issue.
get a good pressure check. 9 to 14 psi. just because its new doesnt mean its good.

The fuel pump was replaced a few months ago just becasue it died on its own. Its definetly getting enough fuel, and plus if it was a fuel problem it would run like crap after it finaly got started and stayed on. But once the truck stays on it runs great.

Re: 89 s-10 cutting out

if it's a cold starting problem it can still be fuel injection related. Part of the system is designed to work only when the engine is cold. Kind of like a choke on a carburated motor.
