Front left speaker cutting out

97 XLT

Sometimes when I hit a bump the front left speaker cuts out. Turning up the volume high will sometimes bring it back. I've replaced the front speakers with expensive UBLs - no change. Can't find anything wrong with head unit (though I haven't actually tried a different one yet). Same for radio, CD and tape. I've a horrible feeling there's a loose connection somewhere inaccessible... Any ideas?

I agree, it is probably a loose connection, I would make sure the connections at the head unit and speaker are tight. Wouldn't hurt to add a little support via electrical tape at the connections.

when i had my 93 xlt explorer my left or right speakers would occasionally cut out when i hit a bump... I brought it to best buy and asked if it was the speakers, and they told me it was the head unit. I went and bought a new one and had it installed, and everything worked perfectly done afterwords...

best of luck, Nick

Problem solved - having fiddled with the speakers and HU to no avail, I took off the rear panel to get to the amp. Made sure the connections were all tight and - hey presto - no more cutting out. I might use some contact spray to make sure before I replace the panel.
