I was wondering if anyone had a site for the specs on this engine.

If anyone could say a few things about its performance, potential, reliabiliity/maintenence cost, or aftermarket support, it would be great.

I am looking at a used 89 turbo, so any info would help me decide if this was a car i would want to buy.

these are Toyota ratings
0-60 is 6.3 seconds
horsepower : 232 @ 5600rpm
Max Torque : 246lbs @ 4000rpm
Compresstion ratio : 8.4 - 1
Curb weight : 5 speed - 3530 lbs
4 speed auto - 3556 lbs
(add 84 lbs for sport roof)
The 1/4 mile times were just over 15 seconds, But ive seen stock mk3's do a 1/4 mile in mid-late 14 seconds..

Its got A lot of potential, and a lot of power can be made fairly easily.. The stock block and internals will hold 600+hp so no need to go there..

maintainance isnt much different than any other 16y/o car.. Pretty decent aftermarket support, not as much as the more common Sport compacts..

As long as the headgasket is addressed first, and done properly, and general maintainance is kept up, they can be very reliable cars..

The 89 supra seems like a great car, the only thing that is on my mind is that it weighs 3500+ pounds. Has anyone experienced any problems with braking with a car this heavy? Esp. in winding roads. I know this car is more of a muscle car, but i just want to know.

Thanx

Heavy braking is sub-par in the MKIII compared to other sports cars of the time, probably the worst aspect of the car. If you plan on doing alot of heavy braking and racing you'll definetly have to upgrade. You'll want to either find the JK big brake adapter bracket or make your own (if you have the skills) to fit some large 4 or 6 pot calipers, and some very large 12-14" rotors in the front. If you're just doing moderate braking and what not then some stock sized Brembos rotors, R4S pads, maybe some SS lines and new higher temp fluids will be a good choice (and cheap too). You can lighten the car up some but you won't get it much below 3Klbs, so you might as well keep all the comforts of the GT luxury car and just add more brakes and more power. 935Motorsports sells a few kits if you don't feel like peicing them together.
